The Only Move-Out Cleaning Checklist You Need

You're moving. Boxes are packed. The new place is calling. The last thing you want to think about is cleaning the old one. But that security deposit — that's real money sitting on the line. Victoria landlords are notoriously thorough with their move-out inspections. What they check is what you need to clean. What they don't check isn't worth your time.

We've done hundreds of move-out cleanings across Victoria. We know what gets the deposit back and what doesn't. Here's exactly what landlords care about and how to hit every mark.

What Landlords Actually Inspect During Walkthroughs

Landlords spend maybe 20 minutes walking through your place. They're checking light switches, baseboards, grout lines, inside the oven, behind the toilet, and window tracks. They notice if the fridge is gunky inside or if there's buildup around the sink. They don't care if the inside of your closet isn't magazine-perfect. They don't open kitchen cabinets or check under the fridge.

Focus on what's visible and what shows wear. That's where you'll either keep your deposit or lose it.

How Should You Deep Clean Your Kitchen for Move-Out?

This is where deposits die. A gunky kitchen costs you. Start here.

Inside the oven: This is priority one. Use an oven cleaner or baking soda paste, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub. Don't leave blackened buildup. Wipe down the interior walls and door glass.

Stovetop and burners: Get under the burners. Grease hides there. Clean the cooktop thoroughly. If there's a range hood, wipe down the outside and replace the filter.

Inside the fridge: This shocks people. You need to clean the interior. Remove shelves, wash them, wipe down all walls. If there's old food or residue, it counts against you. The exterior should be spotless too.

Under the sink: Pull out everything. Scrub the cabinet interior, check for stains or water damage. Wipe the pipes.

Counters and sink: Wipe every surface. The sink should gleam. No stains, no hard water spots. Disinfect the counters and backsplash.

Cabinet exteriors: Wipe them down. They collect grease and dust during cooking.

Cleaning the Bathroom to Landlord Standards

Bathrooms show age fast. Landlords expect them to shine.

Grout lines: Use a small brush and a grout cleaner or bleach solution (not on colored grout). Get into corners and between tiles. Discolored grout is what landlords notice first.

Behind the toilet: Mold and stains hide here. Get a cloth or brush back there. This is surprising to tenants but landlords absolutely check it.

Exhaust fan: Turn off the power, then remove the cover. Dust builds up inside. Vacuum it out or wipe with a damp cloth. Replace if it's damaged.

Toilet bowl and exterior: Scrub the bowl inside and out. Clean around the base where the toilet meets the floor.

Sink and faucet: No water spots. Shine the faucet. Clean the overflow hole at the top of the sink basin.

Tub and shower: Scrub walls, floor, and corners. Get mold out of caulk lines. Squeegee the walls after so water doesn't leave spots.

Your deposit is worth more than the cleaning costs. We've done hundreds of move-out cleans in Victoria.

Bedroom and Living Area Details That Matter

Baseboards: Wipe them. Dust and scuffs are visible and they matter. Use a microfiber cloth or Magic Eraser for marks.

Closet interiors: Vacuum and wipe down the walls. Don't leave debris on the floor or shelves.

Windows and sills: Wash the glass and frames. Clean window tracks thoroughly. Dirt and debris in tracks stand out.

Light switches and outlets: Wipe them. They collect fingerprints and dust.

Walls and scuff marks: Walk the entire apartment and look for wall marks. Use a Magic Eraser on scuffs from furniture. A Magic Eraser is worth its weight in gold for move-outs.

Ceiling vents and returns: Dust and cobwebs are visible. Wipe them.

The Most Common Deposit Deductions to Avoid

Professional carpet cleaning is one of the biggest deductions. If you have carpet, rent a carpet cleaner from a hardware store or hire someone. It costs $100-150 and saves you $300+ on your deposit. It's math.

Wall damage is next. A few nail holes are normal. Large holes, gouges, or scuff marks aren't. Fix what you can before the inspection.

Appliances not cleaned inside cost money. Oven, fridge, and microwave interiors matter.

Hard water stains and mineral buildup in bathrooms and kitchens are deductible. Vinegar and a brush take care of most of it.

Missing or broken blinds, screens, or hardware. Check everything before you leave.

When Should You Schedule Your Move-Out Cleaning in Victoria?

May 1 is the big turnover date in Victoria. If you're leaving then, landlords have back-to-back inspections. They're moving fast. A clean place stands out and gets approval quicker. UVic and Camosun students move out at the end of April. Same crunch.

Schedule your cleaning for the day before inspection. You don't want two weeks to pass between cleaning and the walkthrough where dust settles.

Should You DIY Your Move-Out Clean or Hire a Professional?

If you're comfortable scrubbing grout, cleaning ovens, and getting into corners, you can do this yourself. Set aside a full day. Rent a carpet cleaner if you have carpet. Buy the right supplies: Magic Erasers, oven cleaner, grout cleaner, and a small brush for grout lines.

If you're not a detail person, if your place is large, or if you're moving long distance and can't oversee the cleaning, hire it out. A professional move-out cleaning costs $300-600 depending on size. That's nothing compared to a lost deposit. We've cleaned apartments where a tenant spent two days DIYing and still missed critical spots that cost them $400.

The real question: is your time worth more than the risk? For most people, especially during a stressful move, hiring a professional is the answer.

The Best Room-by-Room Cleaning Order

Start with the kitchen. It's the most intensive. Then the bathroom. Then bedrooms. Leave hallways and living areas for last. If you need to touch up while you're there, it's easier on the cleaner, less-trafficked spaces.

Take photos after you're done and before you hand over keys. Document that the place was clean. It won't help with a dishonest landlord, but it provides proof for dispute resolution.

Keeping Your Security Deposit

Move-out cleaning determines whether you keep your deposit. It's not about perfection. It's about what's visible and what shows care. Baseboards, grout, inside the oven, behind the toilet, window tracks, and wall scuffs. Get those right and you're golden.

Moving is stressful enough without worrying about deposit deductions. Whether you clean it yourself or bring in a pro, make it a priority. Your wallet will thank you.
